1 Reviews on “The Northern Café, Bir, Himachal Pradesh”
When we visited the Northern Café for the first time, it felt like a treasure hunt. Walking through narrow mountain lanes surrounded by greenery, with the sounds of silence and a few houses here and there, we finally stumbled upon this hidden gem. The Northern Café’s unique charm has made it so popular that other places have tried to replicate its setup, but they cannot capture the spirit and passion required to create something like this.
What we liked at the Northern Café in Bir
• Location and Ambiance: Situated off the main street, the Northern Café requires a small hike to reach, which makes the arrival all the more rewarding. The traditional construction, earthy atmosphere, and open fields create a welcoming environment. The cafe boasts the best unobstructed view of the landing site, allowing guests to enjoy nature, watch gliders, experience the sunset, and soak in the local vibe. For those seeking more adventure, the cafe also offers camping facilities.
• Friendliness and Warmth: The founders of the café are genuine and open, offering insights into local culture, delicacies, and their experiences. They strive to provide visitors with a memorable experience. The other staff members are polite and humble, and you may even meet some of the loveliest and friendliest dogs on the property.
• Himachali Delicacies: The Northern Café is one of the early movers in bringing local culture to visitors in Bir Billing. Alongside its traditional architecture and countryside setup, the cafe offers Himachali delicacies, from drinks to main dishes to desserts. Even the masala chai stands out. They use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and homemade organic products, adding to the freshness and flavour.
Things to keep in mind about the Northern Café in Bir
• Walk to the Café: The café is not directly accessible from the main street, which we love. However, if you are not accustomed to walking in the hills, you might find it challenging to reach. The route can become tricky during rain or darkness, so carry an umbrella in monsoons and a torch for nighttime.
• Parking: If you are traveling by car, you will need to park in public parking areas around Bir, as there is no parking available near the cafe.
• Seating: Most of the seating on the ground floor is outdoors. If it is sunny or rainy, you may need to move to the first floor, where you will be required to take off your shoes and sit on the floor, following traditional customs.
