Our visit to the Kutumb in Palampur was almost entirely impromptu. We travelled during the monsoons in August, a season when the prospect of a Himachal trip can come with some hesitation. Yet, even before we arrived, the hosts gave us an immediate sense of comfort about travelling to Palampur during the rains. That reassurance turned out to be well founded. The monsoon landscape was lush, dramatic and full of life, and The Kutumb proved to be an ideal base from which to experience it.
Getting there was also easier than we had anticipated. The Vande Bharat train to Amb Andaura made the journey considerably more convenient, while the cab information shared by the Kutumb worked smoothly for the roughly three-hour road journey from Amb Andaura to the property. We had initially planned to stay for just a couple of days, but by the time we settled in, it felt as though we could have happily extended the trip considerably longer.
How was our stay at the Kutumb?
The first impression of the Kutumb is of a thoughtfully designed home rather than a conventional holiday rental. Strategically located in a central part of Palampur, the bungalow combines generous open spaces, organic gardens, mountain views and an interesting blend of traditional and contemporary architecture. The distinctive stone façade, curved forms, green accents and landscaped garden give the property plenty of character even before you step inside. There is also ample on-premises parking, which adds to the convenience.
Inside, the attention to detail becomes even more apparent. Marble flooring, ethnic wall hangings, framed photographs, decorative objects, candles and colourful upholstery create a warm, lived-in elegance. The entrance living room is spacious enough to accommodate around nine or ten people, with comfortable sofas, centre and side tables, windows opening towards the garden and a balcony where the surrounding mountains become part of the experience. A second, cozier lobby has low-height seating for five or six and works particularly well for relaxed conversations.
One of our favourite spaces was the library. Its semi-circular design allows plenty of natural light while creating an immersive, almost cocoon-like space lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The collection is extensive, with books across genres and age groups, along with games, drawing and colouring books, stationery, a desk, a visitor book and a dewan that practically invites you to spend an unhurried afternoon reading. The quirky owl-themed décor is another charming touch. Owls appear throughout the shelves and display spaces in different forms, turning what could have been a conventional library into a highly personal and memorable room.
The kitchen is equally well considered. The semi-circular layout is practical and well equipped, with tea bags, coffee, milk powder, cookies, an electric kettle, RO drinking water, microwave, refrigerator, stove and gas cylinder, as well as pots, pans, mugs, cutlery and a double sink. Even small details such as hand towels and separate dry and wet garbage bins show that the space has been prepared with actual guests in mind. The adjoining dining area has a large table for eight, along with crockery storage, cabinets and carefully coordinated table linen, mats and napkins.
Our bedroom was comfortable, well-ventilated and thoughtfully appointed, with day and night curtains, ample storage, bedside tables, an attached bathroom and a dressing area. The covered balcony was particularly enjoyable during the monsoons, with two chairs and a table that made it perfect for morning tea, coffee or simply watching the changing mountain weather. Towels, linens, bathroom slippers and a set of eco-conscious toiletries—including wooden combs, bamboo toothbrushes, a razor and recycled paper products—added to the sense that the hosts had considered the smaller details of a stay.
Food was another highlight. The hosts prepared freshly cooked meals with a lovely variety of local and international flavours, and guests can opt for meals by informing them in advance. We particularly enjoyed the warmth and variety of the home-cooked food. The property’s central location also makes food delivery and grocery stocking relatively convenient.
What we did during our stay at the Kutumb?
The weather dictated our plans, but that became part of the fun. On one evening when the rain finally gave us a break, the hosts had everything ready for a bonfire in the spacious garden. Getting involved in lighting the fire, sitting outdoors and following it with a delicious meal made for one of those simple travel experiences that stay with you.
The hosts themselves are an important part of the Kutumb experience. They are well travelled and well read, with a wealth of stories and experiences to share. At the same time, they are deeply rooted in Himachal and involved in community development initiatives. They had thoughtfully curated suggestions for tea garden experiences, restaurants, places to visit, hikes, local farming and cultural experiences, as well as mountain drives.
The highlight for us was a three-hour hike in the rain. Starting from the Kutumb, we walked through narrow lanes, tea gardens, mountain paths and local villages, crossed suspension bridges over the swollen Neugal River, passed terraced farms and temples, and eventually returned with muddy shoes and plenty of memories. The monsoon made the landscape spectacular, from rushing rivers and small waterfalls to mist-covered hills and intensely green fields. It was not a hike we would have attempted without guidance, but the hosts played the role of expert local hike leaders beautifully.
Back at the house, quieter pleasures awaited. We spent time browsing the library, playing table games and colouring mandalas with the neatly sharpened pencil crayons provided by the hosts. It was remarkably easy to slow down here.
Our Verdict
The Kutumb is a compelling choice for anyone looking for a boutique homestay experience in Palampur. What sets it apart is not simply the attractive bungalow, spacious rooms, gardens or mountain setting, but the sense of care that runs through the entire property.
The hosts make the stay particularly special. Their warmth, local knowledge and genuine interest in helping guests experience the region transform the Kutumb from a comfortable place to stay into a memorable Himalayan experience.
Whether you want an active holiday filled with hikes and local exploration, a comfortable space for remote work, or simply a quiet few days surrounded by books, gardens, mountains and good food, the Kutumb offers the flexibility to accommodate all three. We arrived for a couple of days and left feeling that we had barely scratched the surface. That, perhaps, is the best recommendation we can give it: the Kutumb makes you want to stay longer.
